Trek Difficulty & Fitness

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is considered a moderate to fairly strenuous trek. You do not need to be an elite athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness and preparation is recommended. Trekkers should be comfortable walking approximately 5–7 hours per day on varied mountain terrain, including stone steps, ascents and descents.

Some sections, particularly around Ulleri and Chhomrong, involve substantial stone staircases and can be physically demanding. The highest overnight point is Annapurna Base Camp at approximately 4,130 m, so gradual ascent, proper pacing and attention to altitude-related symptoms are important.

Best Time to Trek

The best seasons for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill are generally:

  • Spring: March to May — warmening weather, clear mountain views and spectacular rhododendron blooms.
  • Autumn: September to November — generally stable weather, clear skies and excellent Himalayan visibility.

Winter trekking is possible but can bring cold temperatures and snow at higher elevations. The monsoon season from June to August brings heavier rainfall, cloud, slippery trails and possible landslides, although trekking can still be possible depending on conditions.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for the trek. Your policy should cover trekking at the maximum altitude of the itinerary and emergency medical evacuation, including helicopter evacuation where appropriate. Emergency evacuation and medical expenses are not normally included in the trekking package unless specifically stated.
